By evening, Mara had photographed every surface of the envelope and found nothing supernatural. The paper came from a discontinued postal stock still stored by the thousand in the annex. The type was made by a mechanical ribbon. The future postmark contained a flaw: a hairline break across the number eight. Evidence did not make the letter less disturbing. It only proved that a person had built the disturbance carefully.
