The dead-letter annex had no basement on its current plans. On a 1974 blueprint, however, a narrow service tunnel ran beneath the sorting floor to the old weather office. Pneumatic tubes had once carried storm bulletins directly to postal dispatchers. The council sealed the system when radio became reliable, then forgot to remove it from the electrical network.
