The Other Spike

[SFX: Tape measure retract. Wood stage floor knock]

NARRATOR: Iris reconstructed every cue. Julian's chalk mark was not an actor's spike but a magnetic target beneath the floor. Directly above it, the fly system held a ceremonial sword.

JON BELL: The sword is foam over aluminum. It cannot stab anyone.

IRIS KENT: But its lifting magnet can pull steel.

NARRATOR: Police found a narrow steel blade inside Julian's costume lining. During blackout, the magnet snapped it upward through a prepared seam and into his chest. The murder weapon had been on the victim all evening.

MABEL ROOK: Who altered the costume?

SANA VALE: Wardrobe found it sealed in Julian's dressing room.

ADRIAN FOX: He dressed alone. Perhaps he planned a stunt.

[SFX: Relay switch activated. Pulley wheel creak]

NARRATOR: The magnet operated on cue forty, linked to the blackout. Only Iris, Jon, and Adrian held programming access. Yet the console log showed Sana's understudy code.

SANA VALE: My card disappeared yesterday. I reported it to Adrian.

ADRIAN FOX: You told me after rehearsal, not before.

IRIS KENT: The report timestamp will settle which memory is auditioning.
