The Ghost Recording

[SFX: Tape recorder playback. Cassette tape rewind]

NARRATOR: The balcony voice came from an old show-control sampler. Its file contained Julian arguing that a theatre fire ten years earlier had not begun in faulty wiring. He accused Adrian of using smoke during an illegal audience stunt.

MABEL ROOK: One dresser died in that fire. The company called it an accident and reopened in a month.

ADRIAN FOX: Julian blamed me whenever attention wandered from him.

IRIS KENT: He planned to expose the fire on opening night.

NARRATOR: Jon discovered the blackout cable had been cut by a motorized scenery knife triggered from the same cue. The system could perform murder without anyone moving in darkness.

[SFX: Electric motor. Knife cut rope]

JON BELL: Whoever programmed it understood automation.

SANA VALE: Adrian demanded automated transitions so reviewers would call the production seamless.

NARRATOR: In Julian's dressing room, Iris found iron filings around the mirror and a costume needle magnetized strongly enough to point at the floor. Julian had discovered the blade in his lining before the show. Why had he worn it?

MABEL ROOK: Because he thought it was evidence and wanted the trap to reveal itself publicly.

IRIS KENT: He understood the blade. He did not know the magnet would be powerful enough to kill him.
