Nine Voices

[SFX: Clock tower bell. Rain on stone floor; Metal detector beep]

NARRATOR: Evelyn Shaw audited trials after appeals had failed. She compared microphones, stenography, and filed orders until a missing word revealed who had benefited from silence. In Courtroom Four, eight jurors convicted Mara Flint of murder. The recording contained nine voices saying guilty.

EVELYN SHAW: Play the vote again.

[SFX: Tape deck play button. Chairs creak]

JUROR RECORDING: Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.

CAL DANE: The foreperson took a private count before court. Eight seated jurors after illness reduced the panel. The law allowed it with consent.

MAYA RIN: My client consented because Judge Pell said retrial would take a year. There was no ninth juror.

NARRATOR: Before Evelyn could isolate the voices, the trial's only surviving witness, Edwin Cole, fell from the sealed records gallery above Courtroom Four. The gallery door was alarmed, the windows did not open, and Cal held the only access badge.

RUSSELL QUILL: Cole was unstable. He lived under a false name for months.

EVELYN SHAW: Unstable witnesses still obey gravity. Who knew he was here?

JUDGE ARTHUR PELL: This court did. Miss Shaw, your audit is administrative. Leave the death to police.

[SFX: Printer starts]

NARRATOR: The vote transcript printed by itself. Beneath the nine guilty votes appeared a sentence no one remembered hearing: THE COURT HAS ALREADY DECIDED. The timestamp placed it two minutes before jurors entered the room.
