The Retired Room

[SFX: Fluorescent light hum. Filing cabinets open]

NARRATOR: Evelyn traced Courtroom Four's audio to a renovation completed fifteen years earlier. A retired jury room still existed behind the records gallery, hidden by shelving and connected to the same microphone bus.

CAL DANE: We used it for protected witnesses. The entrance was sealed after a fire inspection.

MAYA RIN: Edwin Cole testified remotely from somewhere in this courthouse. Was he in that room?

RUSSELL QUILL: His location was protected by judicial order.

EVELYN SHAW: That is a yes wearing a robe.

[SFX: Shelf rolls. Hidden door opens]

NARRATOR: Inside they found a microphone, a water glass, and nine numbered vote cards. Card nine bore a fingerprint in dried ink. Cole had listened to deliberations from behind the wall and marked his own verdict.

MAYA RIN: Witnesses cannot hear a jury deliberate.

JUDGE ARTHUR PELL: The audio bus should have been one-way. A wiring fault is not conspiracy.

NARRATOR: Evelyn noticed that the ninth guilty voice matched no juror. It matched Cole. Someone had inserted his whispered vote into the deliberation recording, then used the altered file to certify an eight-person unanimous verdict.

EVELYN SHAW: Why manufacture unanimity when eight guilty votes were enough?

CAL DANE: Because one of the eight did not vote guilty.

[SFX: Evidence bag opens]

NARRATOR: Card six read NOT GUILTY beneath a layer of correction fluid. The official record was not merely crowded by a ninth voice. It had replaced a dissent.
