An Order Without a Signature

NARRATOR: The order permitting eight jurors carried Judge Pell's electronic seal but no cryptographic signature. Russell had filed it. Maya had consented on the record. Cal had escorted the panel. Each person had accepted a document that looked official enough to stop asking questions.

RUSSELL QUILL: The clerk authenticated it.

EVELYN SHAW: Which clerk?

RUSSELL QUILL: Nora Venn. She retired last year.

CAL DANE: Nora died six years ago.

NARRATOR: Someone had kept Nora's user account alive. It uploaded orders late at night and always from Courtroom Four. Evelyn compared keystroke timing. The account typed with long pauses after legal abbreviations, the habit of someone dictating to a clerk rather than being one.

MAYA RIN: Judge Pell dictates every order.

JUDGE ARTHUR PELL: So do half the judges in this building.

[SFX: Elevator chime. Footsteps approach]

NARRATOR: Police found no impact marks on Cole's body consistent with a fall. He had died before entering the gallery. Cal admitted moving the body after receiving an emergency instruction from the judge's chambers.

CAL DANE: The message said Cole had collapsed under witness protection. I was told exposure would endanger his family. I placed him by the rail. I thought police would treat it as suicide and keep his name sealed.

EVELYN SHAW: You altered a death scene to protect procedure.

CAL DANE: I protected an order. I stopped seeing the difference.

NARRATOR: The instruction carried Judge Pell's seal and Nora Venn's dead account. This time Cal had kept the message.
