The Voice of the Court

[SFX: Audio waveform tones. Mouse clicks]

NARRATOR: Evelyn separated the ninth voice from room noise. Beneath Cole's whisper ran a soft mechanical hum at fifty hertz. The jury-room microphones carried sixty. Cole's vote had been recorded elsewhere and inserted later.

CAL DANE: Judge Pell's home recorder uses an imported transformer. Fifty hertz.

JUDGE ARTHUR PELL: You intend to convict me with electrical weather?

EVELYN SHAW: No. With the breath before the vote. Cole says, Arthur, is this enough?

[SFX: Tape deck play button]

COLE'S RECORDING: Arthur, is this enough? Guilty.

NARRATOR: Pell had ordered Cole to construct the false unanimous record. When Cole threatened disclosure, Pell invited him to chambers, drugged him, and sent Cal the false emergency order. The judge used authority as both weapon and alibi, assigning each person one lawful-looking task.

RUSSELL QUILL: Why kill him now? The conviction was already entered.

EVELYN SHAW: Because my audit found nine voices. Cole knew the source file would lead back to Pell's home.

NARRATOR: Pell requested counsel and attempted to leave. Maya handed police the unsigned order, the risk scores, and the preserved message from Nora's account.

JUDGE ARTHUR PELL: Every action I took prevented guilty people from exploiting weak procedure.

MAYA RIN: Procedure is how we learn whether they are guilty. You treated the answer as your private property.
