Evelyn separated the ninth voice from room noise. Beneath Cole's whisper ran a soft mechanical hum at fifty hertz. The jury-room microphones carried sixty. Cole's vote had been recorded elsewhere and inserted later. Pell had ordered Cole to construct the false unanimous record. When Cole threatened disclosure, Pell invited him to chambers, drugged him, and sent Cal the false emergency order. The judge used authority as both weapon and alibi, assigning each person one lawful-looking task.
